‘Fateful day’

When Fred and Blossom Miles began their life together, they began to design a small sporting biplane which they called the ‘Satyr’. It was manufactured for them by Parnall Aircraft of Yate, near Bristol and Miles made the first flight in July 1932. On 25th August, Miles was flying the ‘Satyr’ from Yate to Shoreham when he decided to break his journey at Reading Aerodrome, where he met Charles Powis. It is almost certain that the two men had met on previous occasions, but it appears it was on that day that they first discussed their ideas for the ideal training aircraft. By October, Miles and Blossom had moved to Woodley to design the new aircraft, the ‘Hawk’, which would be manufactured by Phillips & Powis.
