“Last one home buys the tea!”

This painting of two Miles Hawk Majors sets out to capture the spirit of club flying in the mid 1930s.

The prototype Hawk Major had been flown by Tommy Rose into second place in the 1934 King’s Cup Air Race, firmly bringing it to the attention of a public that had long been attracted to the sport of air racing.

For many years the biplane had reigned supreme among private owners and flying clubs. However, when the Miles Hawk had first flown in 1933, it heralded the new age of the monoplane.

The following year, when the Hawk Major appeared, its even sleeker appearance, improved performance and a still very competitive price, soon made it a firm favourite in the light aeroplane market.
