‘International taxi’From 1934 until the outbreak of the war in 1939, Phillips & Powis built a succession of cabin monoplanes designed by FG Miles around a basic wooden structure similar to that used for the original 1933 Hawk. Largest of these were the 5-seat Merlins, of which four were built to provide charter services for companies in Britain, India and Australia. In this painting - the first I ever produced in oils - the prototype Merlin is seen in 1937 on a charter flight from Britain to Abyssinia at the time of the invasion of that country by the Italians. ____________________ Gallery Next painting Contact me |
